ADHD DAD: Being a Dad With ADHD

BEING A DAD WITH ADHD

Being a dad (especially as they get older) carries a large amount of responsibility – namely being a role model for your kids. They will mimic everything you do. So its very important to not only maintain your own composure but also manage all of your symptoms so that the behavior you find objectionable in yourself is not passed down to your kids.

  • Model healthy coping mechanisms. Show your children how to cope with stress, anger, and other difficult emotions in a healthy way. This could include things like exercise, relaxation techniques, and talking to a trusted adult.

  • Be a positive role model. Show your children how to be kind, respectful, and responsible. Teach them the importance of hard work, perseverance, and resilience.

  • Be a good partner to your partner, you will be modeling what relationships look like to your kiddo

Here are some additional tips that may be helpful for dads with ADHD:

  • Set a good example. Children learn by watching adults in their lives. Be the kind of person that you want your children to be.

  • Spend time with your children. One of the best ways to be a good role model for your children is to spend time with them. Show them that you love and care about them.

  • Be involved in your children's lives. Go to their sporting events, school plays, and other activities. Show them that you are interested in their lives.

  • Be a good listener. When your children are talking to you, listen attentively. Let them know that you are interested in what they have to say.

  • Be supportive. Encourage your children to pursue their interests and to follow their dreams. Let them know that you believe in them.

It is also important to be patient and understanding with yourself. It takes time and effort to be a good role model. Don't get discouraged if you make mistakes along the way. Just keep trying and eventually you will be the role model that your children deserve
